Point vs. Counterpoint: Should PC Skirts be Banned? Yes.

For those of you who are seniors, do you remember the trauma that took place during our freshman year when girls were officially banned from wearing skirts? Do you remember rummaging through the piles of used uniforms at the Panther Closet hoping to snag a skirt or three for five dollars each? If you answered yes to any of these, you were around for the Pine Crest dress code amendment banning skirts. But, that didn’t stop some of us now-seniors from wearing them, and heck, even the underclassmen caught onto this trend.

But is it me, or was the girl bonding moment held by adminstration shedding some light on the issue? Mr. Clark told the senior girls to make sure we dress appropriately since we are role models for the underclassmen.  According to Mr. Clark, “we need to dress like we’re going to school” not like we’re going to hang out with friends. This means skirts are a no-no. We wear them too short, perhaps.  In my four years here, I’ve seen many a girl who disobeys the “fingertips rule” we learned in middle school, you know, when we were actually allowed to wear skirts. Girls with long legs have extra problems in the skirt situation since they may look shorter than they are.

The scariest thing that some of the seniors fail to realize is their skirt wearing habits are influencing the underclassmen, and it just ain’t pretty. I don’t think it’s appealing seeing freshman (who look little enough) wearing these even littler skirts. Call it provocative, call it cute, call it stylish. It depends on you.

Maybe every single time Senora Fiallo makes a comment in the hall, she’s seeing some of the same things I am.

Ultimately, the PC skirt ban is like the drug black market. People want what is out of reach. For those of you with alumni sisters in college now – have you ever asked for their skirts? Are you wearing skirts, despite the ban, and using the other doorway to enter the Foreign Language corridor? If you want to avoid the potential dress code violation and scary warnings, maybe longer skirts might be the answer. Or just go back to those awfully uncomfortable skorts.
