On January 20th, world-renowned pop-punk band Fall Out Boy released their new album American Beauty/American Psycho. Many fans have been anticipating this new album arrival since the band put out their last album, Save Rock and Roll. After their return to the music scene, fans received Save Rock and Roll with open arms. Although there were a small number of fans who felt like the album had veered in a different direction from their pre-breakup days, most still loved the catchy beat and deep lyrics. It was even more exciting to see Fall Out Boy gain worldwide notoriety and have songs played on popular radio stations and TV channels.

After the American Beauty/American Psycho album release, fan response changed dramatically. While part of Fall Out Boy’s fans really enjoy the new sound, a bigger group around the world were let down by Fall Out Boy’s change in sound; for many, the sound was way too “pop” and mainstream for their liking. To make matters even worse, Fall Out Boy announced on January 15th that they would be going on a summer tour with Hoodie Allen and Wiz Khalifa. Although these openers are both great artists, they were not what most fans expected. It disappointed many because some fans in the music scene don’t listen to either artist, and they aren’t willing to spend money on a tour with musicians they don’t care about.

In comparison to their older albums like Folie à Deux and From Under the Cork Tree, American Beauty/American Psycho seems a little too polished and poised. Even the lyrics from the title track seem empty compared to older lyrics written by bassist Pete Wentz. Take, for example, “She’s an American beauty/I’m an American psycho” versus “I’m good to go for something golden/Though the motions I’ve been going through have failed”.

Despite this change in sound, Fall Out Boy has been non-apologetic in regards to American Beauty/American Psycho. The album still topped many charts when it first came out, with it currently at number three on iTunes Top 100 chart, just below Taylor Swift and Ne-Yo. The band has thanked all of the fans that have stuck by them, as well as all the new fans they have received from branching out. Whatever the response by some fans, it still seems Fall Out Boy has made themselves a household name and continue to gain a following.

What are your thoughts on American Beauty/American Psycho? Will you be heading out to see them on the Boys of Zummer tour?
