Playing for Change Recap

How lucky are we to be able to see such talent right before our eyes!

Pine Crest School’s annual Playing for Change charity concert is an incredibly successful evening at which our very own peers can show off their musical abilities to support a worthy cause. At this year’s Playing for Change, the money raised went directly to an underprivileged special needs preschool. Among the highlights of this philanthropic event were the emcees of the night, Brett Weiss and Blake Hawthorne, who made the crowd laugh with their comical personalities. The dynamic duo really added to the overall vibe of the evening.  As far as the main performances go, each one was truly a “highlight,”because they were each special and unique.  Students did everything from singing their hearts out, to strumming on the guitar, banging on the drums, and playing the piano. Every reaction in the crowd clearly acknowledged how amazing the night was.  The students were so proud and impressed by their friends’ musical talents that almost every act had a standing ovation.

Every performance was absolutely unforgettable.  One act in particular was Sarah Gale’s cover of “Primadonna” by Marina and the Diamonds.  With Sarah’s incredible voice and obvious passion for music, her performance was an instant fan favorite.  When asking her thoughts on Playing for Change she said, “Playing for Change is so important because it allows Pine Crest and its students to come together every year to play or enjoy music while supporting a worthy cause.  I love performing more than anything and the fact that we are helping make the world a better place at the same time is just an added benefit.”

A huge shout-out goes to Julia Sabra for her hard work and dedication in leading the 2013 Playing for Change concert.  Currently a junior at Pine Crest, Julia has been working with Playing for Change since her freshman year.  This year, she had a beautiful performance of an original song called “Count the Stars,” in which she sang and played guitar. When Julia told Type One about the night, she said, “Playing for Change was a huge success this year.  Each act worked so hard, and the hard work paid off.  Everyone was great and the audience really seemed to enjoy the show.  I had a great time working with the performers to put on such an incredible performance!  We raised over $1,500 to give to our charity.  We raised this money for United Cerebral Palsy, a special needs pre-school in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.  The entire night was amazing, and I never even DREAMED that it would turn out as well as it did, and raise the amount of money that we did!  Congratulations to all of the performers and supporters of the show, we really did make a difference.”

Everyone who attended Playing for Change had an awesome time supporting both their friends and the community.  Congratulations to everyone involved the night- the 2013 Playing for Change just may have been the best one yet!
