Clinton’s Millennial Takeover

The 2016 Presidential Primaries are arriving shortly, and candidates are desperately trying to obtain more votes. Hillary Clinton has long been considered the front runner for the Democratic party, since her campaign announcement in April 2015.  Although she continues to lead the Democratic polls nationwide, she is experiencing some bumps in the road to the Democratic nomination.  Recently, her poll numbers have dropped and in New Hampshire, Bernie Sanders leads the democratic polls by nine points.  It seems that Clinton has been targeting younger voters by creating social media accounts, such as a twitter (@hillaryclinton) and a snapchat (@hillaryclinton).  Her snapchat stories include funny pictures, some of which include her appearance on the Ellen show and videos of her speaking at rallies.

Most recently, Clinton appealed to young voters by appearing on a Saturday Night Live skit.  Clinton’s SNL skit was about Hillary Clinton (played by Kate McKinnon) talking to a bartender named Val (played by Hillary Clinton) about her struggles on the campaign.  Clinton (McKinnon) comes into the bar for a drink after a hard day on the campaign trail. She goes to the bar for a drink and winds up meeting a nice bartender named Val (Clinton) and begins chatting with her.  A few important political points are hit during this conversation.  First of all, Val (Clinton) manages to slide in that she is against the Keystone XL pipeline.  Another political point is made over the fact that it took Clinton longer than most other Democrats to be in favor of same-sex marriage.  Probably one of the most important political messages sent was actually about Clinton’s personality.  Some people have perceived Clinton as unapproachable, so Clinton’s appearance in this skit was meant to change that common assumption.  Her appearance on SNL shows that she can relate to younger people and knows how to laugh at her own faults.  Also, while Val (Clinton) and Clinton (McKinnon) are talking, Clinton (McKinnon) remarks how easy it is to talk to Val (Clinton) in which Val (Clinton) responds by saying “That’s the first time I’ve ever heard that.”

Overall, Clinton’s SNL skit, along with her creation of a twitter handle, and new snapchat feeds show her approachable, charismatic side that is often overshadowed by negative publicity in the media.
