When this time of the year comes around, you actually can feel the spirit and excitement slowly building up to Homecoming week. As a tradition, freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors all dress down throughout the week, depending on the theme that a committee decides on. For example, two years ago, high school students were able to dress up as Hogwarts students, clearly following the theme of the Harry Potter series.
However, this year, homecoming week was shortened, and students were required to wear their uniforms as usual for the first two days. Later in the week, students dressed up in certain colors on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday: pink, class colors, and green and white, respectively. A number of students throughout the grades complained that the dress-down days this year were not as creative as the previous years, clearly anticipating a more unique theme for 2013. Others, however, were satisfied with the dress-down days, still excited about showing school spirit. To see what the Pine Crest community thought about the dress-down days, we interviewed students about their opinions on this year’s homecoming.
Freshman Lilliana DeSouza said, “I like our dress down days this year, but I’m sad it’s not the whole week. A lot of people are upset that we didn’t have a theme this year, but I think it’s okay because I like dressing up in different colors. The seniors also made their own senior citizen day, which is really cool.” Freshman Chloe Quail stated, “I wish there were more dress down days where we can pay to charities because now it just seems like we don’t get as many as we used to.”
Judging by the general responses of students, many were still satisfied with just wearing their class colors this year, even though the week was shortened, and the dress-down days lacked a theme. There certainly was no deficiency in spirit and effort on the students’ part. On Wednesday, school-wide awareness for breast cancer was shown when students dressed in all pink. On Thursday, competition between the grades intensified as students dressed in their class colors and cheered on their grades in the dodgeball game and the Powderpuff game. Friday was the day of the football game, when all of the classes came together and dressed in green and white to support the Pine Crest varsity football team at the pep rally and the game after school. Overall, regardless of the clothing limitations, the Pine Crest student body showed spirit, with their effort, enthusiasm, and attitude throughout the entire week.
