Pine Crest Upper School students have the opportunity to publish their own scholarly investigations in Pine Crest’s signature research journal, Research in the Pine. This journal, run by students of the Science National Honor Society, is expected to release its third edition in April.  

Research in the Pine publishes evidence-based research spanning subjects such as the environmental sciences, medicine, engineering, computer science, chemistry, and the humanities in an effort to showcase the student body’s talent for empirical academia. As explained by Assistant Head of Science Research and Pine Crest Science Teacher Katherine Ganden, “By submitting their work, students gain firsthand experience with the peer review process, developing confidence as both researchers and scientific communicators.” 

There are various formats encouraged for submission to promote publication diversity. In particular, Research in the Pine expects students to submit a paper that is either a literature review, one based on the analysis of pre-existing assessments, or experimental research. Mixed-method approaches to papers are also considered. Abigail Marx ‘26 explained that the Research in the Pine publication team accepts “both science and social science research to broaden our reach to the school community, helping to achieve one of our main goals, which is to showcase the variety of student research produced across the school.” Students’ submissions will undergo a multi-round process prior to publication. In particular, Ganden said, “Before publication, each paper is reviewed by fellow students alongside Upper School teachers and administrators from a wide range of disciplines who bring experience in scholarly research and review.”

Regardless of a student’s preferred framework and chosen topic, Research in the Pine hopes to make its newest issue its best! Go Panthers!
