As the curtain closed on the final performance of Pine Crest’s Upper School musical, 42nd Street, the applause marked a lot more than the end of a show. After weeks of rehearsals, performances, and shared experiences, the cast and crew took their final bow, reflecting on an amazing musical that brought students together both onstage and behind it.
Throughout the rehearsal process, the cast spent countless hours after school and on weekends working together to bring the classic Broadway musical to life. Rehearsals intensified as the show approached, especially during tech week, when long evenings were spent perfecting every line and song. For many students, this time became one of the most meaningful parts of the whole musical.
“The cast bonded a ton during the rehearsal process, especially during tech week,” Gray Maxwell ’29, who played Mac, said. “Since we all shared a similar passion and goal, we all grew super close, becoming almost like a family.” That bond made with the cast carried through to the performances and was evident in the energy in every performance.
Many cast members shared that one of the most rewarding aspects of the show was watching the group grow together.
“It is truly amazing to see how far we have come as a cast,” Hailey Shapiro ’28, a member of the ensemble, said. Hailey continued, “Some of us barely knew each other at the beginning, and by the end, we were so close. Seeing the cast grow and bond into one big group of people we could all rely on was perfect and just what we needed to keep the show going strong.” She also mentioned that times backstage, from laughter and traditions, helped create friendships that will last way beyond the show.
Performing in front of a live audience added to the excitement. Jaden Guerra ’28 ensemble described the performances as both intense and thrilling. “Performing on stage in 42nd Street was an incredible experience,” Jaden said. “My favorite part was definitely the energy of the live audience and the feeling of being part of such a classic production.” Each performance brought forward a powerful rendition.
Balancing rehearsals with academics was also a challenge for many students, particularly with midterms approaching. “The most challenging part was balancing all of my assignments and assessments,” shared Jaden. Despite the added stress, the shared challenges helped strengthen bonds within the cast, especially as older students supported younger ones throughout the process.
Audience members were able to see that connection onstage. The joy and enthusiasm of the performers were clear, making the show an engaging experience for everyone watching.
As the lights dimmed on 42nd Street, the cast reflected on a production that was about more than music and choreography. The musical truly brought students together through hard work, collaboration, and shared passion and experiences. While the performances have ended, the memories and friendships formed throughout the process will continue long after the curtain has closed.
