As the NFL free agency kicks off, teams across the League are making big moves to reshape their teams. In just a few days, there have been League-breaking trades and pickups. Several franchises are positioning themselves for a championship run, while others are focusing on a rebuild. With so much activity happening so quickly, fans and analysts are eager to see which of these bold moves will pay off when the new season begins.
One of the biggest controversies in free-agent history took place a couple of weeks ago. Max Crossby, one of the best, if not the best, defensive linemen in the NFL, was traded to the Baltimore Ravens in return for two first-round picks. This leveled up the Ravens’ defense far above any other team in the League. Unfortunately, Maxx Crosby did not pass his physical, and the Baltimore Ravens backed out of the trade.
Mason Rubin ‘29, a die-hard Ravens fan, was not happy with this. “I was the most excited I have ever been when I saw the trade happen, but then to see it get cancelled truly broke my heart. I haven’t stopped thinking about it,” said Mason.
In place of Maxx Crosby, the Ravens picked up Trey Hendrickson. They plan on paying him $112 million for four years. Although Ravens fans may not be happy with this replacement, it still definitely helps their defense in a major way.
Kenneth Walker signing with the Kansas City Chiefs is a huge move that upgrades their backfield in a major way. The former Super Bowl MVP brings a lot to the table for the Chiefs with his quick feet and powerful build. The Chiefs are paying him 43 million dollars for three years. Kenneth Walker will help take a lot of pressure off Patrick Mahomes by allowing him to run the ball a lot more. Also, Kenneth Walker could be a huge help in the passing game for Mahomes. Another major trade was Dolphins’ Jaylen Waddle getting traded to the Denver Broncos. This trade involved the Broncos giving a 2026 First-Round Pick, which was pick number 30, a 2026 Third-Round Pick, which was pick 94, and a 2026 Fourth-Round Pick, which was number 130 in the draft. The Broncos’ wide receiver core is now stacked with Courtland Sutton, their new addition of Jaylen Waddle, and Troy Franklin. Bo Nix will thrive under these receivers and will very likely have another successful season. Last year, Jaylen Waddle had a great season with 64 receptions, 910 yards, and 6 touchdowns, averaging 14.2 yards per catch. The Broncos plan to pay him $84.75 million for three years.
The Miami Dolphins are in for what looks to be a rebuild. They currently do not have too many weapons and are trading for picks. One of their few weapons is Malik Willis, whom they recently signed from free agency. Malik Willis was a backup quarterback for the Green Bay Packers. When he was given his moment to start when Jordan Love was hurt, he thrived. In his time starting for the Packers, he has a record of 2-1, has thrown for 612 yards, and has thrown for three touchdowns. These impressive starts are what made the Dolphins want to go after and get him. The Dolphins plan to pay him $67.5 million for three years. Malik is also a threat in the run game with his legs, so that is also something to watch out for as this dual-threat young rising star takes the field.
Asher Greenberg ‘29 is a diehard Dolphins fan and said, “Malik Willis is a great player, and I’m excited to see him with the Dolphins. The only issue is the lack of star players on the offensive side of the ball to help him. I think he will struggle a little at first with the lack of help, but later on, learn how to thrive in the new offense.”
Kyler Murray is an NFL veteran who has been in the League for seven years. For all of his seven years, he has been with the Arizona Cardinals. He has had his ups and downs in his years in the NFL. This past NFL season, he suffered a mid-foot sprain, causing him to miss multiple games. Before this injury, Kyler was not playing very well. With his injury and lack of playing well, the Cardinals decided to release him. The Minnesota Vikings decided to sign him to a one-year, $1.3 million contract. Vikings fans are hoping to see big things come out of the duo of Kyler Murray and one of the best receivers, Justin Jefferson. When Kyler gets his chance, he needs to make sure he plays to the best of his ability to prove he is still worthy of being a quarterback in this League.
The San Francisco 49ers had a very successful season, going 12-5. They have many stars on their roster, such as Brock Purdy, George Kittle, and Christian McCaffrey. This roster is already one of the best in the NFL, but now, with the addition of Mike Evans, it might surpass the talent on every other team. Mike Evans is one of the most dominant receivers of our generation. He has been with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for 12 seasons, having 1,000 yards in 11 of those seasons. The 49ers picked up Mike Evans from free agency. His contract consists of $60.4 million for three years. This is a huge addition for the 49ers and might be one that could push them over the edge to win another Super Bowl.
Overall, NFL free agency showed more than just big trades and signings. It showed how teams are working to improve and compete for a championship. Fans experienced excitement and disappointment as major moves were made, creating a lot of anticipation for the upcoming season.
