Many students look forward to the week of Spring Fling, as it is one of the only times students have a relaxed dress code. These dress-down days are planned by the Steering Committee and aimed to spread school spirit engagingly.
Tuesday 3/31: Dress as something or someone whose first initial starts with the first letter of your name.
The first dress-down day on Tuesday was themed: dress as the first letter of your name. This dress-down day has become an Upper School classic. The students unleash their creativity dressing up as characters from movies and TV shows, celebrities, or even Upper School teachers.
“I dressed as a New Jersey devil, and I wore a Jack Hughes jersey. I am a huge fan of the New Jersey Devils, and I enjoyed dressing up to symbolize my first initial,” Nolan Janosky ’28 said.
Wednesday 4/1: Generations! Freshmen as babies, Sophomores as teenagers, Juniors as adults, and Seniors as senior citizens.
Wednesday, Generations Day, is always a staple and brings the Upper School together in some ways like a family. Freshmen wear onesies, pajamas, and pacifiers; sophomores wear streetwear. Juniors dressed up as everything from soccer dads to yoga moms, and of course, seniors bring in canes and walkers and wear grey wigs and glasses.
Future Steering Committee head Maria Tobon ’27 said, “I loved seeing how spirited everyone was on Generations Day. It is always my favorite because everyone gets super creative, and all the grades come together.”
Thursday 4/2: Rhyme without a reason.
The last dress down day, Rhyme Without a Reason, first became popular on social media platforms like TikTok. The concept is that students pick a partner and dress as two rhyming things that seemingly have nothing to do with one another. Some students’ favorites this year were “ref and chef,” “fraternity and maternity,” and “DJ and PJ.”
“My partner, Vika, and I were chef and ref. I liked this dress-down day because I love walking around school and trying to guess other people’s rhymes, ” Sara El-Sherif ’27 said.
Even teachers participated in these dress-down days. Mr. Herpers and Mr. Jurko dressed as “prime and time.” Mr. Jurko wore all different kinds of prime numbers on his shirt, and Mr. Herpers wore watches and clocks all over his body.
The Upper School students love getting to show their spirit in creative ways, and Spring Fling this year was surely a success!
