Generations and Traditions Interconnected Through Holiday Cards
Building Bridges Column
Eliana Nitsberg initiated a card drive over the holidays and tells viewers of PCTV.

In December, Pine Crest sophomore Eliana Nitsberg initiated a card drive in collaboration with the Jewish Heritage Club, First Priority Christian Club, and the Catholic Club. The cards were delivered to the senior citizens of Terraces of Hollywood Assisted and Independent Living Center.

Students wrote an unprecedented 2,617 cards to senior citizens, with holiday messages of joy and kindness.  A metaphorical bridge was built between the different communities of faith and the generations. Even students who were not a part of the clubs were able to take part in the project and made significant contributions.

David Sissom, the Resident Experience Director at the senior center, reflected on the project with utmost gratitude for the students.

Sissom stated, “What all of you did, for our residents, the average age 80 to 90 and up, to give them all of these cards, we cannot thank you enough.”

With just a heartfelt card, students truly brightened the holiday season for everyone at the center.

Linda, a resident of the center, stated, “I really appreciate the fact that the kids went to all this trouble to write all of these down for us.”

From students writing the messages to the residents reading them, a significant bond was created between the generations, and according to Sissom, “the words in the cards will resonate with the residents all year long.”
