Bye Bye Birdie Review

After weeks and weeks of preparation, over 100 of our very talented Pine Crest peers finally showcased their work on the  2013 musical, Bye Bye Birdie, last Friday and Saturday night, and the efforts definitely paid off!

Pine Crest’s fall musical is certainly above the high school level. From the big, powerhouse vocalists to the Tony-level actors, the musical’s impression and atmosphere had that of a professional Broadway production. This Tony Award-winning show was recreated on our very own PC stage as mamma’s boy, Albert Peterson (Andrew Lott), and his secretary Rose (Marissa Hecker) find that their client, Conrad Birdie (Blake Hawthorne), is drafted into the army. Before his departure, Birdie is set to deliver “one last kiss” to a special fan, Kim Macafee (Laura Sky Herman).  The story unfolds as the musically- inclined cast showed off their fun and fresh 50’s dance moves, and the crazy Conrad Birdie fan mobs flood the stage.

The drama ensued with the madness that comes with Conrad Birdie’s entrance into the star-struck town, but the humor also had the audience cracking up with the characters Ursula (Kimmy Ginsberg), Kim’s neurotic father (Louis Browne), and Mama (Lizzie Goldfarb). With the help of these hysterical characters, everyone was laughing all throughout the night.

At the end of the performance, the theme of not growing up too early—like Kim—and not growing up too late—like Albert—was a nice message to take home. After loud cheering and endless rounds of applause, everyone left the auditorium humming the catchy chant, “We love you Conrad, oh yes we do!”
