Type One sat down with one of Pine Crest’s very own musical bands: Women in STEM. After realizing that their musical talents would fit perfectly together, Marisol Beaufrand, Noelia Boldizsar, Evin Rothschild, Jena Rozanski, and Hannah Printz formed a band. Because of their passion of science and equality for women, they decided on the name Women in STEM. These gifted musicians have performed as a group twice, and they plan to perform many more times in the future. Guitar player Jena Rozanski was not present for the interview. [spacer height=”10px” id=”2″]

T1: What is your musical talent? How old were you when you started it?[spacer height=”10px” id=”2″]

Marisol: I have been singing since the womb. No, but actually, I have been singing since before I can remember.[spacer height=”10px” id=”2″]

Noelia: I started playing the saxophone when I was in fifth grade.[spacer height=”10px” id=”2″]

Evin: My love for drumming began when I was seventeen years old.[spacer height=”10px” id=”2″]

T1: What’s your favorite genre of music?[spacer height=”10px” id=”2″]

Marisol: I love musical theatre, pop, and rock.[spacer height=”10px” id=”2″]

Evin: Pop. I also listen to 80s music. It really depends on what mood I am in. Sometimes I love to just jam out to “You Can’t Stop the Beat” from Hairspray.[spacer height=”10px” id=”2″]

T1: Who’s your favorite musician?[spacer height=”10px” id=”2″]

Marisol: Sara Bareilles, hands down. She wrote the hit Broadway musical Waitress.[spacer height=”10px” id=”2″]

Noelia: My favorite musician is Lady Gaga. I can’t stop listening to her new album; you should really check it out.[spacer height=”10px” id=”2″]

Evin: Marisol.[spacer height=”10px” id=”2″]

T1: What enables you to display passion when you perform?[spacer height=”10px” id=”2″]

Marisol: As a woman in STEM, I have a fierce opposition to the patriarchy. I get really into the music when I sing, and I feel like it allows me to display how powerful women can be in the fields of art as well as science.[spacer height=”10px” id=”2″]

Evin: Most of my inspiration as a drummer comes from Barbara McClintock. She was a scientist in the 1940s, and none of the men believed her discoveries on DNA to be true. She eventually won a Nobel Prize. Not only does she inspire me in my own life, but she inspires me to perform.[spacer height=”10px” id=”2″]

T1: Why do you enjoy performing? What’s your favorite thing about it?[spacer height=”10px” id=”2″]

Marisol: I enjoy knowing that everyone is listening to you when you are on a microphone. I feel such a rush when I perform. The tickling of the ivory keys really gets to me.[spacer height=”10px” id=”2″]

Evin: I love the feeling performing makes me feel. I might be in a certain mood before the performance, but once I get on the drums, nothing matters; it is just the drums and me. For example, when I am having a bad day, I pound the drums, and I am able to let my anger out.[spacer height=”10px” id=”2″]

Hannah: My favorite thing about performing with Women in STEM is being onstage and having fun with my friends. It is a much more rewarding feeling when you get to experience it with people you care about.[spacer height=”10px” id=”2″]

T1: What is your favorite memory with singing or performing?[spacer height=”10px” id=”2″]

Marisol: My favorite memory is when I sang “Little Black Dress” because I was able to sing one of my all-time favorite songs.[spacer height=”10px” id=”2″]

Noelia: When Women in STEM performed at a robotics competition. There was a big audience that came out to watch us. It was amazing. I hope we inspired some of the people in the crowd.[spacer height=”10px” id=”2″]

Evin: Out of my two performances, my favorite was my debut. Looking out at the crowd for the first time made me so happy. The crowd was really into our music, which made me even happier.[spacer height=”10px” id=”2″]

T1: What is your favorite quote?[spacer height=”10px” id=”2″]

Marisol: Anything Oprah has said. I love her.[spacer height=”10px” id=”2″]

Evin: Alice Morse Earle once said, “The clock is running, make the most of today.” I remind myself of this quote each and every day.[spacer height=”10px” id=”2″]

T1: How will you use music for the rest of your high school/career?[spacer height=”10px” id=”2″]

Marisol: I am going to be in the spring play and the multicultural assembly. After high school, I am going to Northwestern University. I was accepted into the theatre program there. I might also major in biology. I am so excited to do what I love.[spacer height=”10px” id=”2″]

Noelia: Marisol and I will be in the spring play called A Midsummer Night’s Dream.[spacer height=”10px” id=”2″]

Evin: Women in STEM is the only musical aspect of my life. However, I really enjoy music, so I would love to do something else with music in the future. Maybe I will join an a cappella group in college.[spacer height=”10px” id=”2″]

T1: What is a goal you have for singing?[spacer height=”10px” id=”2″]

Marisol: Outside of the musicals and playing for change, I sing classical music. I am going to solo ensemble this year, and my goal is to make it to states.[spacer height=”10px” id=”2″]

Evin: One of my life goals is to become the President of the United States. I would love to sing at my own inauguration.[spacer height=”10px” id=”2″]

T1: What is your biggest accomplishment?[spacer height=”10px” id=”2″]

Marisol: One of my biggest accomplishments is becoming homecoming queen. Oh, and I won the most dramatic superlative.[spacer height=”10px” id=”2″]

Hannah: I was an all-state musician last year. I am really proud of that accomplishment.[spacer height=”10px” id=”2″]

T1: What are three words to describe you?[spacer height=”10px” id=”2″]

Marisol: Hilarious, dramatic, spunky.[spacer height=”10px” id=”2″]

T1: What do you hope people will take away from your work?[spacer height=”10px” id=”2″]

Marisol: We hope to encourage more females to perform, and we hope they create bands like us![spacer height=”10px” id=”2″]

Noelia: I want to motivate more women in STEM.[spacer height=”10px” id=”2″]

T1: Where are you going to college?[spacer height=”10px” id=”2″]

Marisol: Northwestern University[spacer height=”10px” id=”2″]

Noelia: Duke University[spacer height=”10px” id=”2″]

Evin: Cornell University[spacer height=”10px” id=”2″]

T1: Do you plan to continue your musical career in college?[spacer height=”10px” id=”2″]

Marisol: Definitely. I plan to join many a cappella groups. I also plan on auditioning for the musical theater certificate.[spacer height=”10px” id=”2″]

Noelia: I will probably not play the saxophone in college. However, I will continue doing theater for fun with the student organization.[spacer height=”10px” id=”2″]

Evin: I am not sure where the future will take me. I might join an a cappella group, but I will probably just stick with lacrosse.[spacer height=”10px” id=”2″]

The talented Women in STEM will be performing at a few events coming up, so be sure not to miss out. Their next performance will be at Playing for Change this spring. They may even perform during Sadie or prom. What we know for sure is the Women in STEM have plenty more performances left in them to rock the school.
