On Sunday, March 15th 2015, freshman Andie Weinberg donated all of her hair to St. Baldrick’s, a foundation that supports childhood cancer research. Before donating her hair, Andie raised over $5,000 for the organization in hopes that her donation would make an impact upon as many lives as possible. Blown away by the total amount that she raised, she was extremely ecstatic and grateful to all those who helped her cause.
When asked how and when she decided to donate her hair, Andie stated, “I thought of the idea about two weeks before actually doing it. I was deciding if I wanted to cut my hair or grow it out, and as I was thinking about it I realized that St. Baldrick’s Day was coming up. I thought it would be a good last hair cut before I grew it out.”
Type One asked Andie if there was any specific inspiration for her donation, and she shared, “I have always wanted to do it one day, but over the summer, my camp friend got cancer. I decided to do it in honor of her.”
Andie stated with a smile, “The best part of it all was when my friend texted me the day of saying how much it meant to her. She told me that losing her hair terrified her, and she was so surprised that I would lose my hair voluntarily for her. My friend told me what I did was amazing, and that I was braver than anyone she knew. That in itself, means so much to me. That would definitely be the most meaningful part of it all.”
Andie is certain that her donation will make a another small step forward towards the cure against cancer. She added, “A couple days before I donated, the St. Baldrick’s organization found a cure for childhood neuroblastoma cancer.”
Knowing this, Andie believes that it feels so good to make a difference. When asked if she would ever donate her hair again, she happily replied, “Yes, for sure. I don’t know if I am going to, but if I had to do it all over again, I’d do it in a heartbeat.”
