Working hard has definitely paid off for the Pine Crest golf teams as both the boys’ and girls’ golf teams have achieved incredible feats during their entire seasons, but more importantly during the postseason.
The boys’ team made it their goal to make it to the much-anticipated State tournament this year. In order to achieve their goal, the boys had to attain low scores during the Regional tournament. In the Regional tournament, the team shot a season best one over par 289 to earn a spot in the State finals. That Regional tournament score is the second lowest score in the state going into the State Championship tournament.
Coach Nitowski said, “After a disappointing regional tournament last season the boys’ golf team made it their goal to make it to the state tournament this season.”
Notably, the captains of the team had impressive scores throughout the season, especially during Regionals. Captains Steven Chervony (committed to the University of Texas) and Austin Colon led the way for the boys’ team with a five under par 67 and three under par 69, respectively. Practicing hard for numerous days a week definitely paid off for the boys. Their hard work and dedication was clearly evident in their scores and achievements.
The Lady Panthers also showcased their talent at regionals. Five talented girls proudly represented The Pine, including Catherine Lott, Captain Alexandra Wiley, Paige Skimming, Lisbeth Rubin, and Captain Samantha Haubenstock. Unfortunately, the team as a whole did not make it to states despite their competitive play at regionals. However, junior Captain Samantha Haubenstock was able to play well enough to secure an individual spot at the girls’ state tournament shooting a one under par 71.
Samantha Haubenstock felt as though the team was the most talented in a very long time. She confidently said, “This year we had a good team, one of the best we’ve had in years. Next year I think we might have a chance to make it to states as a team.”
Samantha represented the girls’ team individually at the girls’ state tournament held last Tuesday and Wednesday, October 28th and 29th, finishing 9th overall in the entire tournament, shooting a seven over par 151.
The much-anticipated boys’ state tournament is November 4th and 5th at the Mission Inn Resort. The Panthers are anxiously waiting to play their hearts out and hopefully bring a trophy back to Pine Crest.
