This past week, the country witnessed one of the the greatest players in the history of baseball play his final game at Yankee Stadium. In Derek Jeter’s final at-bat, “Mr. November” himself hit a walk-off RBI single to right on Baltimore Orioles pitcher Evan Meek to give the Yankees the 6-5 victory. With this incredible moment, Jeter ended his spectacular, Hall of Fame career in due fashion. Many popular athletes took to Twitter to praise Jeter for an inspiring 20 years of baseball:
@DAVIDprice14: Shocker! #thecaptain does it like he always does!! That’s what I envisioned 3000 to be like! Not 37 rows deep to left center!! #welldonejeet
@Bharper3407: Not a better place to do it and not a better person for it to happen to…Hats off to you #Captain! #RE2PECT
@ReggieMillerTNT: You CAN’T package that feeling, Derek Jeter will always be the MAN.. Why we love sports.. #TheCaptain
@TheJK_Kid: Are you kidding me?! That just happened! #RE2PECT
Following the game, even Baltimore Orioles player Adam Jones commended Jeter for his impact on the game of baseball:
@SimplyAJ10: Wow just wow. Jeter ur the man. Obviously I want to win but ur a class act and the game and ur peers will miss u more than U know
As this was Jeter’s last game at Yankee Stadium, he elected to not play his position, shortstop, against the Boston Red Sox in his final games, simply to remember his last game as a shortstop on his own turf. However, when Jeter was asked if he would participate in the Yankees’ final games, Jeter responded “Why would I not?”
Jeter also joined Jimmy Fallon this week on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, and commented on his final days as a Yankee in humorous fashion. “Everyone had great things to say, which I really appreciate. But it is very, very odd to be out there and hearing about yourself like you’re about to die.”
Derek Jeter has certainly made a profound impact on the sport of baseball while acting as a role model to children all across America and will go down as one of the all-time greats in baseball.
