Soccer Season Wrap-Up
Following a great season last year, highlighted by the Boy’s Soccer team close loss in the Regional playoffs, expectations were high for the 2011-2012 Boy’s Soccer team. Despite the loss of key players such as Avery Wonnacott and David Abers, the boy’s soccer team led by Alec Neita and Alan Levy found a measure of success until eliminated during the District Playoffs by perennial Pine Crest rival, North Broward Prep. After knocking the insufferable Eagles last year in an emotional shoot-out, Pine Crest just did not find the same amount of success against them, tying 0-0 in their first regular season meeting, but losing 0-1 in their second meeting, and finally 1-2 in the playoffs. The Boys Soccer team however looks onto its next season with questions on both ends of the field after graduating both goalkeepers and their starting forwards among a few key back-ups. However, a strong junior class is ready to step up and fill in next year. Overall, the Panthers finished with a record of 12-5-3.
On the other side of the campus however, the Girl’s Team was facing similar problems. Considering a strong season last year, no one was exactly sure how far the Girl’s Soccer team would go after losing seniors Danielle Grossman and the Kruyff Twins. Ultimately, after a rocky start, it was apparent that this year would serve as a rebuilding year. However, one of its few bright spots was found in freshman Nylah Hamilton as she led the team in scoring throughout the first half of the season. Junior Lelei Pina and senior team-captain Erica Esposito had this to say about the 2011-2012 season: “This year was a rebuilding year for our team. We had a lot of new girls who hadn’t played with each other before. As the season progressed however, we were able to overcome any obstacles and grow into a team that played well together as well as became close friends. Overall, I think our team dynamic and the Pine Crest girls soccer program changed for the better this season.” Despite graduating some key seniors, the Lady Panthers look to return stronger than ever next year and build on their previous success.
