Ultra: The Same Trending Fad?

For those of you who haven’t realized, the crazed techo-fest, Ultra, is less than two weekends away. Any other year, if you didn’t know the dates of this event, you must have been living under a rock. This year, that is not the case. Where has all the hype gone?

Ultra’s fame seemed to take a turn for the worst several months ago when the 2014 ticket prices were released. Skyrocketing from the 2013 three-day pass price of about $300, this year’s ticket price averages out to a whopping $500. That is just for the concert itself. Then adding in hotel prices, traveling expenses, food costs, and the proper neon attire, more and more money is being spent.  Many EDM fans are disappointed about not being able to go this year, whereas others are intentionally not going to argue against these new prices.

On a level more specific to Pine Crest, the weekend of March 29th just so happens to be filled with school events. First off, the girls’

lacrosse team has a game that weekend, and would never trade their spots on the field for the crowds of Ultra. Furthermore, the high school ballet, Cinderella, will be performed that same weekend. With the dancers on stage and the students in the audience, it seems as though plenty of people will be preoccupied with a performance that is the antithesis of the pounding music of Ultra.

So did the excitement of Ultra entirely dwindle down? Not exactly. Is it less than that of previous years, though? Absolutely. Whether this lack of energy will be significant enough to cause Ultra to make a change for next year, though, is unknown.  EDM-listeners from around the world will still pack this insane music festival, but the number of familiar fans who are typically present is bound to decrease. One thing’s for sure: the “pre-feelings” of Ultra are definitely different.
