On January 19, 2011, Pine Crest School had their first assembly dedicated to the Black Student Association. Usually, the BSA performs in the Multi-Cultural Assembly along with other clubs, such as the Indian Heritage Club and the German Club. However, Pine Crest decided to spice things up a bit. This year, the BSA club performed difficult dances, and they also informed the audience about famous African Americans who contributed to several accomplishments and milestones in American history. Some of the accomplished artists mentioned in the assembly were Billie Holiday, Michael Jackson, and even Trey Songz.
Along with the dancing, the BSA read some famous black poetry and staged a mock game show, which cleverly educated the audience about black history entertainment facts. Following the game show, the overhead screen dropped down to show an innovative montage for the fallen superstar Michael Jackson. Preceding the video montage, the BSA performed all time favorites such as “The Boy Is Mine” by Destiny’s Child and “If I Ain’t Got You” by Alicia Keys. Furthermore, club president, Bradley Jones, beat-boxed the song “Killing Me Softly” remade by The Fugees, while sophomore Ivy Kilpatrick sung to his beat. Members of the club then broke off into small groups and performed small dance routines to the current generation’s music.
One of the audiences’ favorite performances was the “Teach Me How To Dougie” dance. Freshman Nathan Flash definitely impressed the crowd with his untouchable dougie when he had a solo part in the routine. Senior Stephen Benson said, “I thought the assembly was good, but I wish they played more of the Dougie song.”
Everyone always seems to enjoy themselves when watching the BSA perform during assemblies. They certainly know how to rile up the crowd and perform a show that will not be forgotten.
