An Ode to Beyonce
‘Twas the pre-exam Friday, and all through the house,
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse.
The pencils and books were laid out on the chair,
But when Queen Bey’ dropped an album she just did not care.
All of the students just had to stop dead,
And “Vegan Cupcakes” was all her Instagram read.
This visual album turned their notes to scrap
If you live under a rock, then here’s a recap:
When all through the web there arose such a clatter,
I dashed onto iTunes to see what was the matter.
The fastest sales of all time almost made iTunes crash,
Eight hundred thousand copies were sold in a flash.
From XO to Blue, Partition to Blow,
Seventeen songs streaming in video.
A full album so beautiful I swear I shed a tear,
The perfect way to end an embarrassing year.
When the first shock was over and it wasn’t a trick,
‘Yonce sneezed on the beat and the beat got sick.
It was as real of a statement as any work came,
And each song had a story, a viewpoint, a claim.
Beyonce is a feminist on her own terms,
There’s no “right” way to do it, Mrs. Carter confirms.
Real conversations about pressures and race,
Set to a backdrop of ballads and bass.
Some images so powerful we had to take note,
Like an insecure girl with cotton balls down her throat.
And Bey’ at the mic picking an aspiration,
Speaks to all us students in this future-centric nation.
Bey talks about family and her baby girl Blue,
The faults of a marriage, and importance of it too.
A woman can be both a mom and a vixen!
Like Starburst commercials, we’re all contradictions!
Chimamanda Ngozi preaches not to feel small,
In the world of Beyonce, women can have it all.
The word “feminist” on two tracks, Bey loudly replies,
Equal rights are way hotter than any guy!
Even weeks later, this record makes my heart quicken,
By Beyonce’s raw words a community was stricken,
Superfan or not, I think no one could fight:
Happy listening to all, and to all a good night.
