By: Sammie Spector Last Sunday, the who’s who of the entertainment world gathered at the Beverly Hilton Hotel for the 68th Annual Golden Globe Awards as many millions watched from their homes. The Golden Globe Awards are presented annually by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association to the best nominee in the categories of acting, directing, movies, and TV shows. Held at the Beverly Hilton since 1944, the Golden Globe Awards are picked by foreign critics, the closest being two from Canada. Many people find this upsetting, stating that the Globes are picked by a group of eighty-six foreign critics versus the six thousand American critics that vote on the Academy Awards. However, the majority of America still settles in the TV room to watch the ceremony. Why? The American critics have no idea… As far as the actual awards go, Best Motion Picture in various categories went to The Social Network, The Kids are Alright, and Toy Story 3. Gabriella Itzler commented on how she felt when Toy Story 3 won. “I was ecstatic when Toy Story 3 won because they’ve been my favorite movies since I saw the first one and immediately went out and bought a Buzz Lightyear costume.” Social Network won many other awards including Best Screenplay, Best Original Score, and Best Director. “Glee” won two awards for their actors, and so did The Fighter. Furthermore, there were several other awards that deserve mention, including Natalie Portman for Black Swan and Colin Firth for The King’s Speech. But this year, the viewers weren’t focused solely on the awards. This time a new “foreign” issue came in the form of one obnoxious British man- Ricky Gervais. Freshman, Brittany Cox, believes that “he was verging on rude, and probably won’t be invited back again because of his nasty comments.” However, some people think he did his job- Mr. Mason’s counters her opinion by saying, “In regards to Gervais: do I think he went over the top? Absolutely not! He did his job… well! EVERYONE was thinking precisely what he said! The fact that so many celebrities expressed overt distaste, to me, shows they lacked a sense of humor. He was respectful and beyond comedic. My concise take on his performance: if they weren’t seeking laughter and comedy, they shouldn’t have hired a COMEDIAN to host!” If the show in general creates waves, then some people believe it’s barely a ripple. Contrary to popular belief, a lot of people do not really care about what movie wins an award. An anonymous Sophomore put it best by stating, “I really have no idea about what goes on at the Awards and I could care less, because I prefer to watch the actual movie instead of the awards ceremony, you know?” In opposition, Mr. Mason gave an eloquent interview (despite many tangents). “Well I’d love to help you out Sammie, but I actually missed the show. I was thoroughly disappointed Social Network was even considered among the top echelon of movies. However, Natalie Portman was fully deserving of her award thanks to her masterful performance in Black Swan. As an audience member we are in a trance watching her (Portman) character’s gradual mental devolution. She is easily lost in passion and completely unable to distinguish reality.” Whether the nominees won awards or not, all of the movies are certainly worth watching. design itself coming in both dark grey and white is equally as cool. All the awesome gifts out there in the technology department certainly make both giving and getting presents this holiday season a tempting idea. For boys, girls, young and old alike, there are more than enough options in store when it comes to fun and useful gadgets.
