The NBA season is underway, and there is a ton of excitement surrounding the league. Derrick Rose is back, the Heat are going for a three-peat, and Dwight’s decision to leave LA unfolds.
The season kicked off on Tuesday, October 29th, with a big game between the Heat and Bulls. LeBron and company played well, spoiling Rose’s return from a year-long ACL injury. Despite being medically cleared by doctors, Rose decided to sit out all of last season, bringing his commitment and love for the game into question. The Bulls have much to prove after an early playoff loss to Miami last season, but their turn at revenge fell short in the season opener.
The Miami Heat: you hate them or you love them. They have appeared in the last three championships, having won two years in a row against the Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs. Although the team has exhibited a ton of success recently, the future may not be so bright for Miami. Dwayne Wade continues to show signs of aging, and all of the Miami’s “Big Three” have the ability to opt out of their contracts following this season in order to become free agents. The hope for the Heat is that they win the championship this year, compelling the “Big Three” to stay and go for the elusive four-peat.
This offseason, Dwight Howard made a huge decision in deciding to leave the LA Lakers for the the up-and-coming Houston Rockets, who have tremendous young talent in James Harden and Chandler Parsons. Mark Cuban, owner of the Dallas Mavericks, recently stated that Dwight made a huge mistake in leaving LA for Houston. Cuban criticized his judgment in picking a team based on a supporting cast over a team’s legacy.
Other storylines around the league this year include “tanking for Wiggins” and the “Win it Now” Nets. Many have complained that some teams are intentionally “trying” to lose, so they can acquire the first pick in the upcoming draft, who will most likely be Andrew Wiggins. Currently playing for the Kansas Jayhawks, Wiggins is being touted as a player with the potential of LeBron James. In contrast to some teams’ plans for success in the future, the Nets decided to spend a ton of money this offseason on old veterans in order to win the championship now.
While we are only a few games into the NBA season, it will be interesting to see how the season plays out.
