Last Wednesday, US Federal Agents arrested a suspect, who they believed had mailed letters that contained the poison, ricin, to both President Obama and Mississippi Senator Roger Wicker.
In only a matter of days, the investigators were able to trace the poisonous letters to Paul Kevin Curtis. A native of Corinth, Mississippi, Curtis worked as an Elvis impersonator in a local club, while also finding time to send threatening letters to politicians and government officials.
Curtis, 45, was arrested at his home in Corinth, Miss just a day after the toxic letter arrived at the office of Sen. Roger Wicker, R-Miss. Two more letters were sent to both President Obama and Judge Sadie Holland of Lee County, MS.
It was the similarities between each of the three letters that finally gave Curtis away. Both of the letters to President Obama and Senator Wicker said, “To see a wrong and not expose it is to become a silent partner to its continuance.” Also, both were signed, “I am KC and I approve this message.”
Thankfully, before Senator Wicker or President Obama could even open the letters, they were tested at an offsite government mailing facility where it was finally determined that the letters were, in fact, treated with ricin, a homemade poison made mostly from ground castor beans.
After authorities made the arrest on Wednesday, Curtis was formally charged with sending mail that contained a threat to kill or harm the president. If convicted, Curtis could face up to 15 years in federal prison.
When asked for any possible motives for this extreme act, Laura Curtis, Paul’s ex-wife, stated, “He is bipolar, and the only thing I can say is he wasn’t on his medicine.”
Nevertheless, Curtis and his team of lawyers are standing firmly against these charges. Curtis’ attorney, Christi R. McCoy, said Curtis “maintains 100 percent that he did not do this.”
Unfortunately, this scare comes at an already dark time for the United States, and with the Boston Marathon bombings still fresh in the minds of many, this uneasy period of terror and uncertainty is only further emphasized.
