On Friday, April 19, Pine Crest students put on the annual Spring Scenes performance. The show consists of hilarious sketches written by our very own seniors and performed by students all grades of the upper school. Whether these skits are pulled from SNL, a viral video on Youtube, or just from a senior’s imagination, Pine Crest students sure know how to make it their own!
Unlike the performances of the past that were held after school in the old ICI, last year’s “Spring Scenes” was held in Stacey Auditorium on an assembly schedule for the whole school to see. This year, however, things were pretty different. The seniors were the only ones who got to see this performance live in the old ICI, giving Spring Scenes that black-box theater feel. All the other students were sent to their advisory classrooms, where they watched Spring Scenes via PCTV. Is this change a good or a bad thing? For me, personally, seeing performances in person is the real experience, and there is nothing like it. That being said, the sketches broadcasted on PCTV in the classrooms presented much more clearly than in Stacey, since the screen is so close and we had control of the volume (for the most part). Also, it gives the seniors another well-deserved “senior privilege.” With that in mind, it will be interesting to see what the set of next year’s Spring Scenes will be.
This year’s performances would not have been the same without the introductions by Mr. Consuegra and guest star, Ms. A. Between every skit, Mr. Consuegra showed off his new hobby and talent of reciting raps in a poetic way. While seeing the teachers participating was super, it is really the seniors’ skits and the student actors and actresses that made this Spring Scenes another legendary one.
Each of the eight sketches of the day was so different, and so well executed! While each one was fantastic in its own way, I do think that there are definitely some lingering highlights of the day. The first sketch, a parody of the “Weekend Update” from SNL, was a take on SNL character Stefon’s hottest scenes in South Florida. I have got to hand it to the actors in this skit- they nailed the parts! Another highlight was definitely Kimmy Ginsburg’s performances. She is one girl who goes ALL out in a scene! Bringing her audience to tears of laughter, Kimmy acted in two SNL skits, in which she played parts by Kristen Wiig. After everyone “made her sing” in her first skit, Kimmy acted as the crazy Sue who cannot keep a secret surprise in the second one. The tension in this scene was definitely felt as Sue tried to contain herself from spilling the secret of her friend’s engagement, and of course the fact that the married couples in the scene had all previously dated in reality. We’re so happy to have another year to look forward to Kimmy’s acting! Another performance that was so clever was “Applicants Anonymous,” the original sketch by Noah Saltzman about students in therapy after being rejected from college. The actors and actresses in that scene had roles each with VERY distinct personalities, each role specifically written for the actor, but it was the end that was just too perfect: the freshman, who had not even started the college process, was kicked out very brashly as he had not felt the pain of college rejection yet!
With those highlights, among many others, this year’s “Spring Scenes” was yet another great one. A HUGE shoutout to all the seniors who directed and/or participated in these sketches. Thanks for such a great performance! It is clear that Spring Scenes continues to be one of the assemblies most looked forward to, and I know we are all waiting anxiously for next year’s!
