He is a polarizing figure. He almost single-handedly transformed the Pine Crest math department. This man is none other than Tom Perschbacher. With the energy of a much younger man, as well as a persistent bounce in his step, Mr. Perschbacher effuses his enthusiasm and passion for math to his students; from his globetrotting adventures to his famous motivational quotes, he is an unforgettable teacher. Heck, there’s even an urban dictionary page in honor of his infamous “Perschbacher time”— time that is notated in radians, rather than hours.
Since the beginning of this school year, there were rumors of an imminent departure. His students taking Calculus BC and Multivariable Calculus were in shock last Monday morning when he officially confirmed the rumors: After over a decade, Mr. Perschbacher is saying goodbye to Pine Crest School.
Although he preferred not to explicitly state the factors for his decision, he hopes to transform the math department when teaching in Vero Beach.
Looking onward to the future, many juniors are worried about his recommendations for colleges and the status of Multivariable Calculus (Multi) for next year. Rest assured. Mr. Perschbacher said, “As I have done in the past with similar situations, I would consider it an honor to write in support of you.” As for Multi, Mr. Perschbacher said that “the school is actively looking for a new teacher.” Unfortunately, as many of you already know, Functions and Calculus Advanced is coming to an end and will not be offered next year due to other changes in the curriculum. Fittingly, the class began when Mr. Perschbacher came to Pine Crest, and will end when he leaves.
Junior Chase Navellier, who has had the pleasure of having Mr. Perschbacher for both Functions and Calculus BC the past two years, sums it up aptly.“I think I speak for everyone when I say that we feel nothing but pains of loss to see him go. He didn’t just teach us the beginnings of Calculus, he changed math for us.”
All in all, the legendary Mr. Perschbacher will be sorely missed by the Pine Crest community.
