Just recently, the art historians of Pine Crest took over New York City to visit the remarkable art they have studied throughout the year. Having visited the Metropolitan Museum, the Guggenheim Museum, and the Museum of Modern Art, you could say they did it all.
Seeing pieces from various times such as the era of Ancient Greece to the era of Impressionism, the students were delighted to finally be face-to-face with the works of magnificent artists. Three chaperones joined a total of 26 students in this eventful trip; a few recounted their experiences. “It was great that everything we studied, we finally got to see in person which made every piece of art that much more extraordinary,” stated senior Mollie Birer. She continued, “my personal favorite was ‘Starry Night’ by Van Gogh.” I also asked Maria DeCasper what she enjoyed most about the trip; “Renoir’s Le Moulin de la Galette is my favorite work. I adored the colors and the humorous and decadent feel of the painting. It was very shocking to see it live. It was much more beautiful for sure.”
The students also had the chance to attend the Broadway show “Once” where Pine Crest alumni, David Abeles, performed. The story was about a young Irishman, Guy, who is a singer, songwriter from Dublin. He spends his days fixing vacuums in in his father’s shop. He soon meets a girl who encourages him to pursue a career in music and eventually ends up recording music with him. The story is a very powerful, yet complicated love story with a far more realistic as opposed to idealized ending. Students raved about the performance saying it was “amazing” as well as “having great music” and “a great setting.”
Overall, the students had an amazing time visiting the art, and greatly enjoyed their experience in New York. Mrs. Ledbetter recounted that the best part for her was having the opportunity to see her students meet up face-to-face with “old friends,” it was truly an emotional and exciting experience for her. Mirella Cardoso summed up the weekend by saying, “The trip to New York was a trip of a lifetime. Re-visiting all of the art works we have studied was an awesome experience. I’m so happy to have had experienced it with my fellow art historians.”
