The Paw Print recently had the chance to meet with Mrs. Emily Sayers, one of the new faculty members in the Upper School who teaches English I Honors and AP Literature.
Mrs. Sayers was born and raised in Delaware and moved to Virginia for college. After college, she moved to Charlotte, NC to begin teaching, before she moved to Florida. She has lived in Florida for the past four years.
When asked about the transition to Pine Crest, Mrs. Sayers described it as being very easy, one reason being the openness of her students.
“You guys as students have been really welcoming, and you are all very eager to learn,” stated Mrs. Sayers.
Her initial attraction to Pine Crest was because of its history and its rigor.
“I liked the history of the school and the longevity of it, and also the rigor that’s associated with it and the standard students are held to, and the tools they are given to succeed,” responded Mrs. Sayers.
Mrs. Sayers was interested in becoming an English teacher because of her love for reading and writing. In addition to her passion for reading, she also wants to help students “realize that they don’t hate reading.”
Before deciding on becoming a teacher, she considered for some time becoming an editor for a book publishing company.
While this job idea intrigued her, she did not end up pursuing editing. Mrs. Sayers said, “I’m a little too social for sitting in a cubicle every day, and so that is why I ended up teaching.”
In addition to reading, Mrs. Sayers enjoys spin biking, which is her exercise of choice. In addition to this, she spends her time with family outside of school.
Overall, Mrs. Sayers said she has had an easy transition to Pine Crest, crediting the wonderful Pine Crest community. She appreciates the receptiveness of her students, which she noted makes being a teacher much easier.
