3.141592653589…. can be called many things: an irrational number, the 16th letter in the greek alphabet, the circular constant, a delicious dessert, a number that overachievers try to memorize in order to impress their teachers and peers. Nevertheless, the numerical value of the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter is most commonly known by Pi. On March 14, specifically at 1:59 PM (3.14159), Pi Day is celebrated around the mathematical world. No other school celebrates Pi Day like Pine Crest. Whether it is because of our love for math, or just an excuse to skip a day of math class to load up on sugar, Pi Day is definitely a big event at the Pine.
The moment I stepped out of my car on that fateful day this year, I immediately noticed that many math students, whether in Algebra I, Multivariate Calculus or everywhere in between, were holding some sort of pie, stack of plates, napkins, etc., which were all circular. The dedicated math department has once again successfully attracted more members to the Pi Day following. The Math Club even got the lower school students involved as they played Pi Day themed games with the kids throughout the morning. “It was so great to watch the K-5 students enjoy themselves while also learning a little bit of math,” said Bryan Steiner, a Pi Day enthusiast and member of the Math Club. Looks like the club is ensuring that this tradition will continue in the future. The words of Ms. Hernandez, as a newcomer to the PC tradition, can accurately describe the events that occur at the Pine on 3/14: “PC goes all-out.”
