Nothing can escape the satiric eyes of The Second City. With material ripped from breaking news headlines, trashy celebrities, and corrupt politicians, it seems like nothing is off-limits in this witty 90 minutes of sketch comedy and improv.
Boasting alumni by the likes of Gilda Radner, Steve Carrell, Tina Fey, Julia-Louis Dreyfus, and Amy Poehler, The Second City Comedy Theater has been producing premier comedic talent in the industry for more than fifty years. Its roots in hands-on, audience-involved improvisational games have created a novel and exhilarating comedy experience that enthralls audiences across the nation.
Since 1959, Second City has expanded to three locations: Chicago, Toronto, Los Angeles, and four touring companies perform Second City revues across North America and the world. The Broward Center of the Performing Arts was graced with the presence of one of the aforementioned troops on Friday, March 8th.
Sketches including audience favorite “I Am Socially Awkward” and audience-fed improv bits had the theater roaring with laughter all night. Senior Savannah Kennelly, a long-time fan of Second City, was pulled on stage for one of Kellen Alexander’s skits. “It was really cool, but at the same time pretty nerve-wracking,” she said. “It was kind of like putting your life, or at least your dignity, in the hands of the troop and hoping they don’t make you do anything too embarrassing.”
The Second City is known to feature many Saturday Night Live cast members, so if you’re ever near their theaters or can catch their tour show, don’t miss out on the opportunity. You never know which rising star you might see.
