As each day passes, Pine Crest students are getting closer and closer to the end of the year. The closer we get to the long-awaited summer full of freedom (admit it, we know you’ve been counting down the days since the first day of school), or even graduation for seniors, the more we forget about our responsibilities as students. The few months before summer vacation mean AP exams and finals, but many of us often overlook one small detail.
Community service.
In order to graduate, Pine Crest students need a minimum of fifty hours. Of course, the more hours you do, the better chance you have at scholarships, and it doesn’t hurt to have more hours. Helping out the community should not be considered a task. We are not only improving the lives of others but also our own by being the best citizens we can be.
With the numerous opportunities Pine Crest provides its students to ensure that they meet graduation requirements, there is no need to begin to stress for hours. Making a dent in them should be easy with current community service projects like: Wish A Book’s Book Drive, a used ink cartridge and battery recycling drive, Gear Up for Youth’s sports equipment drive, and a magazine drive.
Wish A Book-Book Drive
Wish A Book is currently looking for donations of new and used books for SOS Children’s Village in Coconut Creek. Donations can be dropped off in Mrs. Damoorgian’s office. Donating five new books are worth two hours of community service hours; five used books are worth one hour. Contact Drew Siegel if you want to help.
Used Ink Cartridge & Battery Recycling Drive
Mitchell Friedman is collecting used ink cartridges and batteries as part of his community service project. One hour of community service will be awarded for giving five items. Items can be dropped off in the Upper School Office.
Gear Up for Youth’s Gently-Used Sports Equipment Drive
Gear Up for Youth is collecting gently-used bats, balls, helmets, tennis racquets, and any other types of sporting equipment. All sports equipment will be donated to The Boys and Girls Club. One hour of community service will be awarded per item. Once again, donated equipment can be dropped off in Mrs. Damoorgian’s office. Contact Dillon Biddiscombe to lend a hand.
Magazine Drive
Gently-used magazines that will be donated to patients at local hospitals can be dropped off in Mrs. Damoorgian’s office. One hour of community service will be awarded for every five magazines. The magazines should not be more than a month old, and it is okay if your address or name is on the magazines as a label will be placed over them. Contact Bella Polley for more information.
