This week, Type One reached out to junior Bryce Emmanuel, a student artist. Emmanuel specializes in digital photography and design, and is currently enrolled in the 2D Digital Design AP class here at Pine Crest. This advanced course allows students to explore creative realms through the use of technology and computers.

Since he was a young boy, art has been a large part of Emmanuel’s life. He first started expressing his creativity through writing and sharing his short poems. But, it was not until he was thirteen that he started to become interested in photography. One of the first photos he remembers taking is of his younger cousin. He noted that he often likes to look back on his older work to see how he is evolved as an artist.

Emmanuel became even more serious about his art in high school, and he now enjoys the freedom that his current class allows for his own individual creative expression. He stated, “The thing about art is that it begs you to explore the many facets of what it means to be an artist. I have seen this more than ever while participating in my AP 2D Design class, where I get the freedom and the range to explore as many mediums as I see fit.”

Emmanuel’s immense passion for art extends outside simply just the walls of the classroom. It serves as a great inspiration to him and allows him to reflect and find a voice for himself through a different lens. Much of Emmanuel’s art incorporates black pride and activism, two things he is very passionate about. He seeks to have an underlying message in all of his art, giving him the ability to connect with others. Emmanuel hopes that the immense inspiration that art serves for him will help him to inspire others.

In talking about this passion, he said, “My inspiration for art is going past the boundaries that I set for myself. Art was something that I, at first, stumbled in, and had to work to get good at, but once I found my place within art, I could finally use it as a voice for my expression.”

Art has given Bryce Emmanuel a different outlook on life in order to fully appreciate the beauty of the world around him. Overcoming fears of not being good enough has allowed him to improve his skills as well as think for himself. Because art has been such a big part of Emmanuel’s life, he hopes it will continue to do so and take him out of his comfort zone. He strives to become more involved in his craft, as well as carry it throughout his college years and beyond.
