On May 10, 2013, thousands will flock to the theater to view F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1925 novel, The Great Gatsby, adapted for the big screen. The Great Gatsby is noticeable for it’s wide popularity across decades capturing the era’s extravagance, luxury, and sometimes decadence of the upper class. The novel’s adaption to theater has become quite popular among the senior class, who read the novel during the senior year.
The novel (and the film) follows the life of Nick Carraway, a young man from the Mid-West who comes to New York to begin a new life and gain the success that the Roaring Twenties offered. While there he meets an eccentric millionaire, Jay Gatsby, whose wealth and background is filled with shady deals and misinformation. Gatsby is in love with a friend of Nick’s, Daisy, and recruits Nick to help him rekindle their romance. Along the way, Nick discovers the true nature of the elite in New York with their crazy lifestyles and moral failings.
Toby McGuire will play the role of Nick Carraway, Jay Gatsby played by Leonardo Di Caprio, Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan, and Joel Edgerton playing Tom Buchanan, Daisy’s violent and cheating husband.
The movie has gained quite a lot of traction among PC students who are eager to see this film. The novel, read during a PC students junior or senior year, is generally considered to be one of the more popular books on the required reading list for it’s interesting plot line and engaging characters. English teachers, too, are excited for the movie, though hope that the film doesn’t replace reading the novel in the minds and hearts of students.
