Kendall Jenner has proved her “It Girl” status once again by landing the cover of the coveted Vogue September Issue. However, it has not all been paparazzi and runways for the twenty-year-old supermodel. Growing up, Kendall was not popular in school and did not have a lot of friends. She saw her sisters, the Kardashians, in the media, but at home Kendall was lonely. “I remember crying in my bedroom about the fact that Kylie had so many friends and I didn’t,” Kendall shares. Now that has all changed. Young women around the world view Kendall as a role model and admire how gracious she is, despite her fame. The powerhouse model did not want to be treated differently just because of her family name. Instead, she wanted to make a name for herself, separate from that of her family. “We wanted to book her on her merit as a model…every bit of her success is a testament to her hard work and passion,” designer Marc Jacobs remarked. His show was one of the first major designer brands Kendall was hired for. Her focus and dedication towards modeling has paid off by landing the September Issue of Vogue.
This month’s Vogue is said to be the most important of the year. “September signals the end of summertime leisure and evokes a fresh start,” Jessica Schiffer from Vogue writes. The cover model selection process is not taken lightly either. The editors from Vogue pour over potential cover stars and carefully select which one will get the spot. They try to find someone who, “…is both enormously popular and selective with press,” Jessica Schiffer also writes. Kendall Jenner’s elusive personality fits these parameters perfectly. She has the media wrapped around her pinky finger and keeps her personal life private, leaving people wanting more. Unfortunately, not everyone has been receiving Kendall Jenner’s stardom or accomplishment well. One Vogue reader wrote a review, “just sad that Wintour, Vogue, and a lot of top fashion brands have become such sellouts.”
The Vogue cover and the star were not the only big news from the issue. Lupita Nyong’o was featured in an article about opportunities for people of color. She is using her fame to raise awareness about the important issue. “Being able to use my platform to expand and diversify the African voice…I feel very passionate about that…” Nyong’o says. Nyong’o visited her home country of Kenya to visit with the women there and talk with them about opportunities for African women. She feels confident that people have more tolerance for people of different races and that as time continues, more and more equality will arise.
All in all, the September issue of Vogue was worth the read from the cover photo to the articles inside.
