For Hollywood, January does not only mean the start of a new year but also the start of the award season. The 2016 season started on Sunday, January 10th with the 73rd annual Golden Globes Awards. As the first the show of the season, the Golden Globes sets the precedent for the fashion, the production, and of course the winners for the rest of the season. This year’s show was hosted by four time host Ricky Gervais. The audience loved his crude humor and didn’t seem to mind that he was making fun of them. His favorite topics to joke about throughout the night was the fact that the sci-fi drama The Martian was nominated as a comedy movie because of it’s comic relief and that the highest paid woman actress of the year, Jennifer Lawrence, was arguing about the women pay gap. Even Lawrence thought his jokes were hilarious.
While the hosting of the show adds humor to the night, the ceremony is meant to honor the people that kept people entertained throughout the year. With five nominations the romantic drama Carol led the way for movies and with three nominations each, American Crime, Fargo, Mr. Robot, Outlander, Transparent, and Wolf Hall were all tied for most nominations for a TV show. Here are some of the highlights of the winners:
Most Surprising: Even though Lady Gaga is certainly not unknown, it was surprising to many that she won for best actress in a TV mini-series for her debut performance in American Horror Story: Hotel. Even though she was certainly good in the show, many people were left wondering if her star power gave her the extra edge against the stiff competition. Another surprise of the night was that the brand new psychological thriller, Mr. Robot, won two of its three awards, including best TV series drama. Although one of the best shows of the year, Mr. Robot was arguably the least well-known and was not on a streaming platform or a big network. Perhaps what was most surprising though was that Carol, which led nominations going into the night, left empty handed.
Most Predictable: While there were a few surprises, most of the night’s wins were more predictable. Of course Pixar’s Inside Out won best animated motion picture, Jennifer Lawrence won best performance by an actress in a motion picture Musical or Comedy for Joy, and Jon Hamm took home a Golden Globe for the final season of the hit show Mad Men.
Most Deserved: Ricky Gervais may have loved using The Martian’s nominations as a joke but it was certainly a happy moment when Matt Damon won for best performance by an actor in a motion picture musical or comedy for his stellar performance in The Martian. His performance as Mark Watney stood out as one of the most memorable character of the year. While Empire may have been snubbed at the 2015 Emmy’s, it entered the Golden Globes with two nominations. Although it didn’t win best tv series- drama, Taraji Henson won for her portrayal of Cookie Lyon, which arguably makes the show.
