On January 6th, there was a bombing outside the NAACP building in Colorado. Although there still lacks coverage from most major news sources, the FBI have been investigating possible motives and suspects. It is certainly a possibility of being a hate crime or domestic terrorism, however we are exploring all possibilities of potential motive,” said Amy Sanders, spokeswoman for the FBI in Denver.
The members of the NAACP staff members were inside of the building when the homemade pipe bomb exploded. The bomb was placed against the building alongside a gasoline canister which, fortunately, failed to ignite. This attack has raised questions of whether or not this chapter of the NAACP is a target of domestic terrorism. “We’re looking at all possible motives, not just specifically that the NAACP was targeted, although that is one possible motive,” said FBI Special Agent Amy Sanders, who noted that there was both a barbershop and tax services office nearby. “There could be any number of reasons.”
Wlliam Barber, President of the NAACP, has stressed that they will not be silenced and will remain just as active as they were during the grand jury decisions against indicted officers in the deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner.
In regards to the organization being exclusive to black people, Allen said, “This organization, contrary to a lot of people’s beliefs, is one of diversity.” He also noted that the national organization was started by white Americans. Today, the chapter’s executive board includes black, white and Hispanic members.
Instead of reacting harshly and with hate, Allen stated, “This incident is not reflective of Colorado Springs,” Allen said. “This is the actions of someone totally outside of the mindset of what goes on in this community.” He continues to stay calm and hopes that this will be the only attack on their offices.
Investigators of the FBI say that they are searching for a potential person of interest described as a balding white man possibly in his 40s. Witnesses reportedly saw a man matching that description fleeing the scene after the explosion driving a dirty white pickup truck, MSNBC reported.
