Sometimes it feels like school keeps moving even when you don’t. Whether you were sick, traveling, or just had something unexpected come up, catching up after being absent can feel overwhelming. But with the right plan, it doesn’t have to be.
According to the Pine Crest Student Handbook, “regular attendance is essential for learning.”
Group discussions, labs, and hands-on activities can’t be recreated, which is why the Upper School encourages students to stay in touch with their teachers and complete missed work as soon as possible.
Mrs. Wendy Harrigan, Upper School Science department head, explained the first step students should take when they miss class.
“When students miss school, they should first check Canvas to see what they have missed and what resources are available to support them,” said Mrs. Harrigan. “Each class should have a weekly overview posted on Sunday with an outline of the plans for each class for that week, and the Calendar/Agenda should show any due dates for assignments or assessments.”
Mr. Nicholas Lowe, Math and AP Computer Science Principles teacher, also emphasized the importance of communication.
“The best thing students can do is to communicate with their teachers,” said Mr. Lowe. “Writing ‘What did I miss?’ isn’t all that helpful. Instead, something like, ‘I plan on completing the Section 4.5 notes and homework by Wednesday. Can we meet during office hours if I have any questions?”
Students agree that clear communication makes a huge difference.
Andrew Polazzi ’29 said, “I think communication during and after absences is so important. Even just emailing your teachers, looking at the weekly overview, and talking to them about the things that need to be made up can be so helpful when missing, even if it’s not that many days.”
While catching up can seem overwhelming, staying proactive can make it much easier. Remember the steps: parents should call or email the School and let them know you will not be in that day or days and why, check Canvas to see what work you need to do and how to do it, and email your teachers to communicate about missed assignments, tests, or due dates. Though it might seem intimidating, teachers are always happy to help. Finally, take it one step at a time, go to office hours if needed, and work through everything at your own pace. Missing school is never ideal, but with organization, communication, and a clear plan, it can make it easier than it seems, and you will be caught up in no time.
