Here is what Ana to say about her artwork when she sat down with Type One.
T1: When did you begin to paint?
Ana: I began to paint when I was eleven. It all started with one of my mother’s good friends, who is an incredible artist. I visited her house and was mesmerized by her work, and she offered to teach me as much as she could. She also inspired me to take things further with regards to art.
T1: Are you taking any art classes this year?
Ana: This year, I’m taking Sculpture and Ceramics II.
T1: What is the most important knowledge you have gained from this class?
Ana: I was able to learn the skills of a new medium, expand my choices to more than just painting, and widen my appreciation for a new forms of art.
T1: What are you planning on doing, regarding art, for your next two years of high school?
Ana: I would like to take art classes at an art institute this summer to gain more technical experience. Generally, I hope to continue painting in the next few years, and if the opportunity comes about, to exhibit my work in a gallery. Finally, I am excited to continue incorporating my newfound interest in photography into my painting. I look forward to adding depth to my understanding of painting through the study of art history during my junior and senior years.
T1: Are you currently working on anything?
Ana: I’m working on a portfolio to present to art school summer program admissions for the next two summers. The theme of the portfolio is nature and it focuses on diverse representations of nature from all over the world.

T1: What do you believe is your biggest challenge as an artist?
Ana: My biggest challenge as an artist is criticism, or more specifically, being unable to see my work the way other people do, especially after hearing their criticism. In other words, maintaining my own opinion of my work and not changing it once I have finished and others have reviewed it.
T1: What about your greatest accomplishment as an artist?
Ana: My greatest accomplishment as an artist was when my longtime art teacher and friend became ill and asked me to take over and teach some of her intermediate art classes. The experience was not only very rewarding, but it also meant a lot that she trusted me and thought my abilities were enough to help teach others.
T1: How would you describe your creative process?
Ana: When I get a new idea I usually work on it every day of the week, basically as much as I can. A new idea never leaves my mind, and is all I can think about. Ideas usually come to me randomly and when they do, I try not to over-think them. If I have an idea in mind, I just go with it. I find that when I over-think my ideas I end up not doing anything at all.
