Mostly Cancelled

A minute or so after the news sunk in, shocked and unhappy chatter fills the dance studio – Mrs. Gooden has just disappointingly announced that Mostly Classical has been cancelled for this year. Everyone’s disappointment is palpable; for dancers, Mostly Classical is the one of the few times during the year in which they feel they can showcase their talents.  As Junior Natalie Lindo puts it, “All of the sports have multiple games a year – we only have the ballet.” The ability to choose one’s own variation to audition with also gives some the opportunity to attempt pieces that they never would have been able to by simply being involved in the annual ballet, which has very few leads and is far more time-consuming; or in Dance Etc., which only a minority of the members of the dance department are involved. “It enables students to go out of their comfort zones and perform something they normally don’t,” Giorgi Mombach says of Mostly Classical.

Not only is Mostly Classical a great opportunity for any performer willing to audition, whether they be dancers, singers, or musicians, but it has also been a wonderful opportunity for the audience to see what talents the students at Pine Crest have. Mostly Classical truly is a quality performance, and it will be missed this year. But, don’t worry, there is a ray of hope for all of the would-be performers and viewers.  The upcoming Showcase Recitals in dance, music, and drama will allow many students to display their talents.  Also, with the recent revival of the thought-to-be-dead Spring Scenes, things could be looking up for the performing arts at Pine Crest after all.
