Pine Crest is set to kick off another new and exciting season of Boys’ Soccer, and there are many new faces that will try and help carry the team this season. After six days of tryouts, twenty-one players made the Varsity team. Coach Olaf, who was previously the coach of both the boys’ and girls’ middle school soccer teams, will begin his first season as the head coach of the varsity team. Eight seniors on the team have graduated since last year, including Mark Simpson, who is now playing college soccer at the University of Cincinnati. Some of the top players who will try to fill the void left by the seniors are Jack Marchetto, Ryan Driscoll, and Max Krieg, as well as senior captain Brandon Danzansky. In addition, three talented freshmen, Joseph Murciano, Garon Joannou, and David Lederman, made the team and will look to contribute early in their high school careers. Lederman commented on his goals for this season, saying, “I hope to start at center alongside senior Joao Nunes, and to play solid defense. I’ll do whatever it takes to make sure the ball doesn’t hit the back of the net.” This team looks to have a great mixture of youth and experience that could put together a very successful season.
Last year, Pine Crest had an outstanding season that unfortunately came to an end with a loss to rival North Broward Preparatory School in the District Semi-Finals. The players have high hopes for this season, as Murciano commented on the team’s goals and expectations. Murciano concluded, “We hope to have a winning record and make Districts again, and I really believe that we can do it.”
The team will look to get off to a great start this season in their season opener against Pompano High.
