Two years ago if asked what they thought of Taylor Swift, most people would likely have answered with “she has too many boyfriends.” Since the release of her blockbuster album 1989, Swift has become one of the most famous musicians in the world. The album, which had the best opening week album sales in the last decade, became an instant hit. Subsequently, it led to Swift’s world tour. Last Tuesday, The 1989 World Tour stopped at American Airlines Arena in Miami and certainly left the audience in awe.
1989 was largely inspired by Swift’s move to New York, and the tour definitely reflected that. The stage was adorned with huge street signs, street lamps, and park benches to make the stage feel like New York City. When the arena went dark, sounds of the subway and a busy city were playing and then suddenly, Swift and her dancers came out from the center of the stage.
When Swift first came on stage the audience could feel the excitement in the arena. After her first three songs, Swift stopped to tell the audience that today was special because it was the first year anniversary or as she said,“birthday,” of 1989. She said that this meant there was going to be a lot of surprises and by surprises she meant special guests. “The 1989 Tour” has become famous for its special guests at almost every stop on the tour, so when Swift said there would be more than one, the crowd went wild.
After two more songs, it was already time for the first special guest. Swift teased the audience a bit and then welcomed Miami Heat player Dwayne Wade. Wade told the audience how Swift has inspired him and then presented her with a Miami heat jersey.
After Wade presented her the jersey, Swift took one of the longer costume changes in the show. While she was backstage changing, videos of her friends talking about her played. The videos included Selena Gomez, Cara Delevinge, Haim, and many more of Swift’s girlfriends. Swift than came back on stage to sing a few more songs and then it was time to introduce her first musical guest. Swift introduced Mr. 305, Pitbull, to sing his hit song “Give Me Everything.”
Swift’s more intimate part of the concert, where she sings two of her older songs and her slower song of 1989, “Clean,” was well received by the audience. After she had another longer costume change and sang her hit “Style,” she welcomed her third and final special guest. Latin music pioneer, as she described him, Ricky Martin came out to sing “Livin’ la Vida Loca.”
Swift closed out the show with a few more songs including “Bad Blood” and her newest hit “Wildest Dreams.” Of course, the show would not have been complete without a grand finale of her number one hit single “Shake it Off.” Although she brought out multiple amazing guest performers, Swift herself was the real star of the show.
