With homecoming week upon us, one of the most exciting events, the annual Powderpuff Football game, between the junior and senior girls, is right around the corner. The two teams will square off on this Thursday, October 16 on Banks Field.
This annual battle is very exciting, and this year should be no different as both teams are ready to show off their talents. Students can expect this to be a high-scoring affair, as both teams are unbelievably athletic on offense and have playmakers all over the field. Both teams are extremely eager to get out on the field and prove that they are the better team, as well as earn bragging rights for their respective grade.
Senior Nicole Schwartz is especially enthusiastic about the opportunity to show the junior class what the senior girls are all about. She was the quarterback on the winning junior team last year, and has proven that she can come up big when it matters. “This year’s junior class has an incredible amount of athleticism though that will be a whole new challenge,” Schwartz says. “They are big, strong, athletic, and probably a lot better than us. But we have heart.”
“Having Nicole Schwartz as my quarterback makes catching passes easy as pie,” Nicole predicted fellow senior Alexandra Gershman would say.
Needless to say, she does not keep her confidence a secret. A confident quarterback is an essential part of the team, so the duo of Schwartz and Gershman should pose a major problem for the juniors. Last year, Schwartz threw the winning touchdown pass to Gershman on the last play of the game, proving that this duo is dangerous on offense. The seniors hope to continue their previous success on Thursday; however, the juniors look to be a strong team as well.
Some notable junior girls on this year’s team include Maddie Birer, Sophia Danielson, Autumn Clark, Jordyn Elliot, and Karlie Simpson. They are led by quarterback Brittany Hammel, and it looks like there will be quite the quarterback battle between her and Schwartz.
Junior Jordyn Elliot commented on her team’s attitude as the game approaches, “All of our players play a sport and are in really good shape, so I think we have a lot of potential. In general, we are all just really excited because it is our first Powderpuff and we’ve been looking forward to it for so long.” The juniors appear to be quietly confident in their ability to knock off the winners from last year. Students will see soon enough if they have enough young talent to beat the Seniors.
While the winning team remains to be seen, one thing is very clear; this is going to be a great game between two teams ready to finally reap the rewards for all the hard work they have put in leading up to the game.
