Spotlight of the Week: Travis Holt
Student Photographer and Videographer
This week, Type One sat down with senior Travis Holt, an avid photographer, videographer, and editor. He shares with us some of his favorite aspects of photography, his inspirations, and even gives some advice to other aspiring photographers.
Type One: When did you first become interested in photography, videography, and editing?
Travis Holt: Several summers ago I bought a GoPro to make short videos of my adventures, and I haven’t set down a camera since.
T1: Which of your works is your favorite and why?
Holt: My New York City video is my favorite work so far. A few friends and I traveled around NYC for a week, and I captured all the best moments on video. Continuing to stay motivated through the process of editing can be a challenge, so I was really proud when I finished the video. Also, this video was well received, so that always makes it even more exciting.
T1: What is your favorite part of photography and editing?
Holt: The best part of photography is that it inspires me to go to places I would not have otherwise visited. Photography is part of the fun, and exploring new places is the other aspect I enjoy. In regards to editing, I feel like it really helps me make my photos unique.
T1: What is your biggest inspiration?
Holt: Instagram is an endless source of inspiration for me, as there is quite a large online community of photographers and “content creators.” Some of my biggest online inspirations include Sam Kolder, @Bejamin, and Nainoa Langer.
T1: Where can other people find your photos and videos?
Holt: I post all of my work on Instagram (@holtravis).
T1: What types of camera and software do you use?
Holt: My camera is a Sony A6300, and I edit all my photos in Lightroom. For video production, I use Final Cut Pro and some Adobe softwares, although I am constantly battling with slow editing softwares.
T1: How would you describe your style of editing?
Holt: I would consider my photography to be surreal. I try not to focus on one style, but I do set a general mood. I want my photos to be eye-catching and exciting. Although a photo can never fully re-create the moment it was taken, I try to capture the essence of the location or subject.
T1: How does your Instagram account affect your work?
Holt: Everything I shoot and edit goes on Instagram. While I’m photographing, I keep in mind what other people like to see on my account.
T1: What are your favorite subjects to photograph?
Holt: I prefer landscapes over other subjects, although I’d like to get more experience with portraits and lifestyle shots. Landscapes interest me most because I enjoy finding unique compositions and playing with lighting.
T1: What other interests do you have?
Holt: I recently became interested in music production, so I’ve been devoting a lot of time to this. Additionally I like playing sports, hanging out with friends, and browsing the internet.
T1: What advice would you give to aspiring photographers and editors?
Holt: Take as many photos as you can. If you love photography, just keep working at it.
T1: Do you plan to continue with photography and editing in the future and in college?
Holt: I would love to continue with photography. I’m not sure where it will take me in the future, but I think that’s part of the fun.
A man of many talents, Travis has captured and beautifully edited a multitude of breathtaking photos and videos. Type One is excited to see how he expresses his talent in the future, for we are sure we will be hearing about his work again.
