Call Me By Your Name: A Celebration of Love
Warning: this article contains spoilers.
Directed by Luca Guadignina, Call Me By Your Name was by far one of the most amazing movies of the year.
Call Me By Your Name is based on the 2007 novel by Andre Aciman and is set in 1980s Northern Italy. The film follows the perspective of 17-year-old Elio, as he spends the summer with his Italian parents in their Lombardy villa. He meets American graduate student Oliver, who works as an intern for Elio’s father for the duration of the summer. The two soon develop a beautifully special and genuine romantic relationship. Elio is a complicated boy, who feels intensely and displays an array of emotions and sensitivity. Oliver almost embodies the word American with his cool self-confidence, which he exhibits through a casual demeanor. As the viewer sees the evolution of the two and the vulnerability displayed in the relationship, it proves to be a quite emotionally stimulating sight.
The acting in this film was nothing less than extraordinary. Newcomer Timothee Chalamet had a difficult job to perform; taking Elio’s most intimate thoughts from the book and displaying his emotions in not just his words, but in facial expressions, is an element that really added to the beauty of the film. Armie Hammer did an amazing job as Oliver, as well. He successfully portrayed him as appearing one-dimensional, only to go on to reveal the character’s depth. It should also be noted that the movie’s score was amazing as well. Each song was skillfully placed to capture the emotion being displayed in that moment.
Call Me By Your Name is best described as a celebration of love. Through the exquisite cinematography and intimate shots, the movie explores the depths of a relationship in the most real and human way. This film was heartfelt, truthful, and basically the epitome of genuineness; it is a must watch.
