Ally showcases her favorite piece of art.

This week, Type One sat down with senior Ally Feeney, a talented artist who has created many vivid pieces both inside and outside of school. Ally gave some inside information on her experience as an artist and explained her artistic goals, inspirations, and accomplishments.

T1: When did you first become interested in art?

Ally Feeney:  I first became interested in art in middle school. I found that I was able to express my emotions through my artwork and it really helped me open up as a person and gain confidence.

T1: What goals do you have in relation to your art?

AF: I create each piece with the intention of evoking emotions in my audience. Many of my pieces center around faces and different ranges of emotions, so I feel it is important for my audience to connect to and understand my work and the process behind the creation of all my pieces.

T1: What is your favorite piece that you have created?

AF:  My favorite piece will always be the first portrait I ever created at the beginning of my junior year. I had never experimented with faces and was very hesitant to start the piece, but by the end I had created something I never knew I was capable of. This piece ended up inspiring me to center my portfolio around people.

T1: How would you describe your artistic style?

AF: I would describe my artistic style as vibrant and thought provoking. In almost all of my pieces, I use vibrant colors to try and better relay the emotions I put into my work. For example, I may choose to make the background of a picture red to try and express anger or excitement, while I may use blue to express a more mellow or melancholy mood.

T1: What is your favorite medium to work in?

AF: My favorite medium to work with would definitely be colored pencil. I feel comfortable using colored pencils and know my capabilities, but occasionally I try and challenge myself to step outside of my comfort zone and experiment with different mediums.

T1: Who or what inspires you as an artist?

AF: I find inspiration from many different sources, but the most common one would be the people around me and things that are relevant to my life.

T1: What do you enjoy most about art?

AF: The thing I enjoy most about art is that I am able to openly and freely express myself and my emotions, especially at times that I feel unable to express them through words. All of my pieces are motivated by my inner emotions which allow me to create my best works.

T1: How do you think your Instagram account and website dedicated to showcasing your art have impacted your art?

AF: My Instagram account and website motivate me to be consistent with my art, as I am constantly posting pictures of my latest pieces. Also, hearing feedback from people close to me helps drive me in the right direction for my next piece.

T1: Who have you sold art to?

AF: I have sold art to a few people: my family, a few friends, and some of my parents’ friends. Oftentimes it is difficult to let go of pieces which took so much time and effort, but doing so also allows me to focus on new pieces.

T1: Do you plan to continue art in the future and in college?

AF: Yes, I do plan to continue art in college. I am submitting my portfolio to all of the colleges I am applying to and will hopefully get the opportunity to further my career in art in college.
