Clemson Shocks the College Football World
On December 5th, 2016, I brought you my College Football Playoff Predictions. The season has finally come to a close, and there is a new team atop the college football world. Let’s take a look at what I got right, what I got wrong, and how Clemson managed to supplant the reigning champs Alabama.
In the first semi-final game between the Washington Huskies and the Alabama Crimson Tide, I was right on the money. The mighty Crimson Tide proved to be too much for the Huskies as Alabama defeated Washington 24-7. Washington’s offense had been so dynamic all season long, but it is a testament to the Tide’s incredible defense that the Huskies only managed to put seven points on the board. Alabama quarterback Jalen Hurts struggled throwing the ball downfield for the Tide, but running back Bo Scarbrough picked up the slack and was able to gash the Washington defense for 180 yards and two touchdowns.
The other semi-final game was a showdown between the Ohio State Buckeyes and the Clemson Tigers. I previously voiced my opinion that Ohio State did not deserve its spot in the playoff, and I was proven right as they were blown out 31-0 by the Tigers. Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett struggled mightily, throwing for just 127 yards with two interceptions and no touchdowns. Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson was far from perfect as he threw two interceptions as well, but his 259 yards and a touchdown through the air proved to be more than enough to take down the stagnant Buckeyes.
The stage was set for a rematch of last year’s title game between Alabama and Clemson on January 9th in Tampa, Florida. The Tide led the entire game, and Clemson’s Watson was not having anywhere near the success that he had enjoyed the rest of the season. Heading into the fourth quarter, the Tide was firmly in control 24-14. My prediction of a Tide victory seemed to be correct, but then the unthinkable happened. Alabama had given up only 13.0 points per game all season, but they gave up 21 points to Tigers in the fourth quarter alone. What started out as a rough night for Watson turned into a magnificent performance as he threw for 420 yards and three touchdowns. With one second remaining, Watson found receiver Hunter Renfrow wide open in the end zone to put Clemson ahead 35-31 to win the school’s first national championship since 1981. This game will go down as one of the best of all time.
Alabama will come back with a vengeance next season, but for now Clemson will enjoy its new position as the kings of college football.
