In early 2018, the fan-favorite anti-hero, Deadpool, will return to theaters for the sequel. With the recent departure of the film’s first director, Tim Miller, many fans have wondered: who should direct the sequel? [spacer height=”20px”]
Now, one of the things that made the first Deadpool so great was its size. While it still had a big budget in comparison to other superhero movies, it was a much smaller film. It featured fewer characters, smaller action scenes, and a simpler storyline. One of the reasons why Tim Miller decided against directing the sequel was because he wanted to make it more stylized and larger than the original, while Ryan Reynolds wanted to keep it small.[spacer height=”20px”]
Immediately following the release of this news that Deadpool would need a new director, movie fanatics jumped to the top choice for violent movies: Quentin Tarantino. Dozens of petitions were created to get the famous director to lead the Deadpool sequel. Since Tarantino is great at portraying violence in movies, many people assumed that he would be the best choice for the next Deadpool film. This, however, was a faulty assumption.[spacer height=”20px”]
Tarantino loves to make stylized films. His movies are always grandiose with extremely exaggerated violence. Each film is an epic of its own, full of interweaving story arcs and interesting characters. If he were to direct Deadpool 2, he would most likely run into the same wall Miller did when trying to pitch his idea to Reynolds.[spacer height=”20px”]
I believe Deadpool’s sequel should stick to what made the first film great: its small size and comedy. Everything about Deadpool 2 should be simple. Tarantino is too big of a director to hire for a film such as this. While he is one of my favorite directors, I truly believe he should stay as far away from Deadpool as possible.[spacer height=”20px”]
Another favorite candidate for director, and my personal choice, would be John Wick‘s director David Leitch. John Wick is one of the best action films in recent years, with a sequel coming next year. Leitch knows how to direct action, and he even helped work on the big airport fight scene in Marvel’s recent Captain America: Civil War. His ability to tell a great story while keeping it simple in John Wick is exactly why he should direct the next Deadpool movie. In fact, rumors are spreading that he is the top choice by 20th Century Fox for the sequel.[spacer height=”20px”]
While not as famous or distinguished as Tarantino, Leitch would be the perfect fit for the next Deadpool. If this becomes reality, avid fans should be able to rest easily knowing the film is in good hands. But, in the end, I guess we will have to wait for the film to hit theaters to truly know if Leitch will do a great job.[spacer height=”20px”]
