Miami Hurricanes Start the Football Season Strong
The Miami Hurricanes are off to an undefeated start through four games. The University of Miami’s football team has recently been the highest climber in the polls, surging up to number 10. Even a bye week didn’t stop their upward trend.
So far, they’ve won all four games against Florida A&M University, Florida Atlantic University, Georgia Institute of Technology, and Appalachian State. Their defense on a play-to-play basis is arguably the best in the country, and their offense is also strong, led by QB Brad Kaaya. The team is allowing the fewest points in the country right now through week four.
Their rushing and passing are ranked second and fifth nationally respectively. They have not allowed a red zone touchdown through three games. In fact, the Canes overall are estimated to be the sixth best team in the country, according to SB Nation. However, even with all of these great stats in hand, they have yet to hit their toughest stretch. October 8th brings with it the Florida State Seminoles, and many believe that if the Canes can pull off the in-conference upset the program will truly be back on the map. They have not defeated the Seminoles since 2009.
The Canes are riding a wave of momentum and seem unlikely to slow down anytime soon, even though a tough stretch of ACC games lies ahead. “I am really happy my alma mater is finally being successful again after a few down years,” said PC trainer Garrick Edwards about the start to this season. With 696 points in the AP poll, the Canes are closing on 13th ranked Baylor (729) and 12th ranked FSU (804) as of week four.
Their next game, against Florida State this Saturday, October 8th will be a defining moment of Mark Richt’s first season in Miami. They also face UNC next Saturday October 15th and have the chance to beat them head-on. The Canes hope to climb into the top five of the rankings. As junior Marissa Gailitis said, “After several disappointing seasons they’re finally pulling through.” Both teams can threaten Miami’s security or boost the team even higher.
With this strong start 4-0, the Hurricanes are on the road to a fantastic season.
