Even though the Oscars were only a few weeks ago, Hollywood is not slowing down. With a slew of brand new superhero movies, Summer 2016 is looking like it will be full of box office hits. Summer is usually the time for big-budget action packed movies to come out, but with the amount of similar movies this year, it will be interesting to see which ones dominate and which ones flop.
Although technically not part of the summer season, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice fits the bill for action superhero movie. With Henry Cavill returning for his second movie and newcomer Ben Affleck starring as the titular roles of Superman and Batman, the movie is looking to revitalize the DC comics universe as the Avengers movies have done for Marvel.
Do two popular superheroes pitted against each other sound interesting to you? If yes, then you will be super excited to hear that Marvel’s new Superhero movie, Captain America: Civil War, follows the same plot. In the superhero movie starting off the actual summer season on May 15th, Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. reprise their roles of Captain America and Ironman to battle each other. It seems weird that the movie is branded Captain America when Downey Jr.’s role is equally as big and more than half of the Avengers are set to appear in the movie also.
While Marvel has found success in the Avengers movies, there has been critical acclaim for the new series of X-Men movies starring Jennifer Lawrence. While Lawrence started out playing a supporting character equal to most others in X-Men: First Class, she is stepping into what is being advertised as a lead role in this summer’s X-Men: Apocalypse. Coming out on May 27th, the movie has tough competition against the special effect filled Alice in Wonderland: Through the Looking Glass directed by Tim Burton.
Since Marvel has two blockbusters this summer, it is not surprising that DC decided to finish off the summer season with Suicide Squad coming out on August 5. The movie, filled with famous faces playing some of the most iconic villains, seems like it will play into the more comedic aspect from its trailer. Although the trailer may not be a complete representation of the movie, comedic relief in big productions like this has been on the rise since Guardians of the Galaxy was so well received in 2014.
Surprisingly enough there are more Superhero movies coming out this summer than the ones mentioned previously mentioned. Even 2014’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot, which was panned by critics and did not do well at the box office, is getting a sequel. The theme of this summer for superhero movies and others seems to be movies with familiar characters and plotlines because the biggest non-superhero movies being premiered are Finding Dory, Independence Day: Resurgence, and The Legend of Tarzan. While it does not look like there will be many completely original movies coming out, this summer will offer many chances to see characters that audiences have already grown to love.
